Lucky Hello Kitty

Filed under: Chuugoku, Domestic, Trips — myyearinjapan @ 1:32 pm

Seen in Kurashiki: A big Hello Kitty with the character for ‘luck (福)’ on its belly. Kitty holds up her left paw. You can see similar cats all over Japan or at Japanese restaurants in other countries. It’s called a Maneki-Neko (招き猫), or ‘beckoning cat’. If the left paw is raised, the cat is beckoning customers, and if the right paw is raised, the cat is beckoning wealth and good luck. That’s why these statues are typically seen at restaurants or other shops.
