Lily Bulb Recipe: Butter Lilies

The other day, as I was browsing the produce aisle of my local supermarket, I came across this interesting ingredient: lily bulbs. I bought it (I think it was about 130 yen, or about $1.50) and then started asking people what I could make with it. Without fail, everyone told me to make chawanmushi, steamed egg custard. But that dish is tricky to do right and takes time. I was am lazy, so I searched for a simpler recipe and I found something much simpler through a simple google search.

Butter Lilies

Ingredients:
Lily bulb             1
Butter                  20g
Soy sauce           to taste

Directions:

1. Take the lily bulb and wash it thoroughly.

2. Pull apart all the bulb’s petals.

3. Wrap the lily bulb, along with the butter in aluminum foil and cook it the toaster oven for 10 to 15 minutes.

4. Check to make sure the lily bulbs are tender. If they aren’t, pop them back into the toaster oven for another couple minutes. If they are tender, splash on a smidge of soy sauce, grab a fork (or some chopsticks) and enjoy!

Now you know what to do next time you come across lily bulbs next to the broccoli at your local market. XD
